The Night Routine That Undoes Commute Damage

What you do at 10 PM determines what your skin looks like at 8 AM.

Most skincare content focuses on mornings โ€” SPF, serums, protection. But your skin does its most important work at night, between 11 PM and 2 AM, when cell turnover peaks and repair enzymes are most active. A commuter who neglects their night routine is losing the most valuable skincare hours of the day.

Step 1: Double Cleanse (Non-Negotiable)

A single cleanser cannot remove SPF, pollution particles, and sebum simultaneously. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to dissolve sunscreen and surface pollutants. Follow with a gentle water-based cleanser to clear pores. Skipping this means sleeping with PM2.5 particles oxidising against your skin for 7โ€“8 hours.

AQI-based rule

On days when AQI exceeds 150, spend an extra 30 seconds on the oil cleanse step. CommuteGlow shows today's AQI on the skincare screen so you always know how thorough to be.

Step 2: Active Treatment

Retinol or niacinamide โ€” not both on the same night if you're a beginner. Retinol accelerates cell turnover and reverses UV damage over time; it works exclusively at night because sunlight degrades it. Niacinamide strengthens the skin barrier eroded by pollution and is gentler for daily use. Alternate them: retinol 3 nights a week, niacinamide the rest.

Step 3: Repair Moisturiser

Night moisturisers are formulated differently from day creams โ€” they're richer, often contain ceramides and peptides, and are designed for occlusion rather than lightweight wear. Ceramides are essential: pollution depletes them, and without them, your skin barrier becomes porous, losing moisture and letting more irritants in.

Step 4: Lip and Eye (60 seconds, don't skip)

The skin around the eyes is 4x thinner than the rest of the face and shows commute stress โ€” dark circles, puffiness, fine lines โ€” first. A basic eye cream with caffeine or peptides applied nightly costs very little and pays dividends in 4โ€“6 weeks. Lip balm with SPF or vitamin E prevents the drying effect of car air conditioning.

CommuteGlow's evening routine suggestion adjusts based on the day's pollution and UV levels โ€” so your night routine targets exactly what today put your skin through.
